Projects

Overview:

Due in no small part to its close proximity to both Stamford and Greenwich, Mianus River Park's enormous popularity calls for constant monitoring and diligent upkeep. Many different groups and agencies have committed time and resources to help maintain and preserve the Park.

The Friends of the MRP are receptive to additional suggestions for projects to further the Park's preservation. All projects must be approved by the municipalities that own the land. For work done in Treetops State Forest, approval comes from the holders of the Conservation Easement (Stamford, Greenwich, the Greenwich Land Trust, and the Stamford Land Conservation Trust) and the CT DEP (Dept of Environmental Protection)

Past projects have included:

  • Riverbank restoration (funded and implemented by the Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited, under the direction of Trout Unlimited)
  • Deer exclusion area (planned and funded by the City of Stamford)
  • Several Eagle Scout projects, involving trail signage and trailwork
  • Creation of a Trail Map, using data from the Greenwich and Stamford GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Departments
  • Trailwork (by volunteers, under the direction of the Trailwork Coordinator)
  • Corporate Volunteer Days
  • Plantings near the Red Barn by Keep Stamford Beautiful, under the direction of Emilio Funicella
  • Stairs below the Red Barn, by SCA (Student Conservation Assn), under the direction of Program Coordinator Khadija L. Bshara
  • Action Plan: a Plan for Managing Park Resources - The product of many public meetings, facilitated by the National Park Service's Director of Connecticut Projects, John Monroe

Volunteers

We welcome corporations to volunteer their employees for work days in the Park.

We welcome Scouts and other individuals to volunteer their services.

Routine trailwork projects are planned and led by the Trailwork Coordinator.
