Action Plan: a Plan for Managing Park ResourcesPublic MeetingsA series of Public Meetings were held in 2004 through 2006, facilitated by the National Park Service's John Monroe, and organized by Stamford Senior Planner Erin McKenna. The purpose of these meetings was to address a gradual deterioration of the Mianus River Park, partially due to increasing usage by the diverse user-groups. With public input, one of the results of these meetings was the creation of a MRP Action Plan. To view this Plan and its associated Appendices, click on the attachments below.
Formation of the Friends of the MRPAnother outcome of these meetings was the formation of the Friends of the Mianus River Park. Eight park users who had attended the public meetings, held an organizing meeting on Feb 28th, 2006. Our goals were generally to be stewards for the Park, to act as liaison with Greenwich and Stamford, and to represent the diverse user groups. The Friends have formed a not for profit corporation under the laws of Connecticut and have a fully-constituted Board of Directors which meets monthly. The various board members coordinate trail and riverbank restoration projects, liaise with the Stamford and Greenwich and interact with various users of the park. In February 2011, the Friends received tax-exempt status from the IRS so contributors may fully deduct contributions. We are also in the process of establishing membership criteria. Because visitors view the Mianus River Park and the adjacent Mianus River State Park (Treetops) as one entity, we have included Treetops in our stewardship. Several of our trailworkers have taken Trail-Building and Maintenance courses, sponsored by the Connecticut Forest and Parks Assn and the New England Mountain Biking Assn. Some future projects that we might undertake:
